Behind the Project

Location

The Location

Proyecto La Colorada is located in the region of Ucayali, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, near the city of Pucallpa. The project area is surrounded by lush forests, rivers, and small indigenous communities. Additionally, nearby is the stunning Lake Cashibococha, which is an important source of freshwater for the local communities and a vital ecosystem for many species of flora and fauna. The natural beauty of the area and its rich biodiversity make it an ideal location for our mission of restoring degraded lands and promoting sustainable practices in collaboration with the local people.

People

The People

The success of our project is largely due to the collaboration between the family Soria, the local community of Lacre, and our team in Belgium. The Soria family, based in Lima and Pucallpa, brings extensive knowledge and experience in sustainable land use and forest management, as well as deep ties to the local communities. The community of Lacre is the heart of our project, with their commitment to improving their environment and creating a sustainable future. Our team in Belgium provides technical support and expertise in fundraising, outreach, and project management. Together, we work towards our common goal of restoring degraded lands to their natural and healthy state, while creating economic opportunities for local communities and promoting sustainable practices worldwide.

Challenges

The Challenges

Our project faces various challenges such as forest fires, plant-eating insects and animals, and human intervention.

Forest Fires

Forest Fires

Forest fires are a serious challenge that our project faces. These fires can quickly destroy large areas of forest and threaten the local biodiversity. We work closely with the local community to implement preventative measures, such as controlled burns and fire breaks, to reduce the risk of forest fires. Additionally, we provide education and training to local farmers on sustainable land management practices to reduce the risk of accidental fires.

Animals & Insects

Insects and animals can be a major threat to our efforts to restore degraded lands. We work with local experts to develop strategies for pest control that are safe and sustainable. We also encourage the planting of diverse plant species to promote natural pest control and attract beneficial insects.

People

Human activity, including illegal logging and slash-and-burn agriculture, poses a significant challenge to our project. We work with local authorities and community members to promote sustainable land use practices and raise awareness about the importance of forest conservation. Additionally, we engage in reforestation efforts to help replenish the forests that have been lost to human activities.
